Forward into the breach!

Many of you know that my 2015 was in many ways pretty crappy.  Except for a few bright and shining spots — trips to Italy, Mongolia, Indiana, and Mississippi; my genius students — a whole bunch of things piled on to add up to a lousy year.  2016, which starts in a few hours, will be better, I have determined: will even be affirmatively good.  So I say, bring it on.

2015, not sorry to see ya go.

You are making me want to sing you the lyrics of “You’ll Never Walk Alone” from Carousel!
Remember, you are brilliant and you are well loved by many of us. 2016, here we come!

Sorry for your crappy 2015! May the high points of 2016 merge together crowding out all the bad stuff. Thank you for your blog, your books, and for just being there reaching out to your many fans. Out here in California, I’ve developed an affection for New York in the abstract just because you love it so much. All good things for 2016 and strength for the not-so-good.
